The Colorado State Capitol Building was built in 1908, and the buildings dome is covered with 200 ounces of 24K gold leaf. Inside, Colorado onyx was used as wainscoting. The entire world's supply of this unusual rose-colored stone was used in the building and no more of it has been found since. Another interesting feature is the point on the west staircase that is exactly one mile above sea level.

A B-52B Stratofortress eight-engine jet bomber sits outside the museum.

The Black American West Museum and Heritage Center tells the story of Black pioneers, Buffalo Soldiers, African American cowboys and businessmen who helped settle the West. Photographs, personal artifacts, clothing and other exhibits depict the lives of the working cowboys in the Old West who were African Americans. Many of them were freed slaves who migrated west after the Civil War.

Colorado’s history includes Indians, gunfighters, wagon trains, mining operations, railroads, sodbusters, explorers, Spanish conquistadors, gold panners, mountain men and buffalo hunters and you can learn about them all at the Colorado History Museum. A giant diorama depicts Denver in 1860, before fire and flood destroyed it.
